Early Life and Childhood Trauma

Brin Chaffey, a British skydiving instructor, developed a debilitating fear of heights after falling from a tree as a young boy. The trauma left an indelible mark on his psyche, causing him to avoid even climbing a ladder to change a lightbulb.

Overcoming Fears Through Extreme Measures

While many people dream of overcoming their phobias, few succeed in doing so. Brin Chaffey's success story demonstrates the power of facing one's fears head-on. Despite his severe acrophobia, Chaffey chose to work as a skydiving instructor.

From Dog Training to Parachuting

Chaffey's previous career as a dog trainer gave way to a decade-long journey with parachutes. Ironically, his work did not exacerbate his phobia. On the contrary, he found solace and a sense of comfort suspended in the sky.

A Transformative First Jump

In 1995, Chaffey joined friends for a charity skydive. Overcoming his initial hesitation, he took the plunge with his eyes closed. As his parachute deployed, he realized that the fear he had anticipated was replaced by a thrill.

Embracing the Adrenaline Rush

Inspired by his first jump, Chaffey gave skydiving another chance. After approximately 120 jumps, he discovered a passion for the sport. Although his fear of heights never fully abated, there was something about controlled freefall that silenced his phobia.

A Career in the Skies

Unbeknownst to all, Brin Chaffey resolved to pursue a career in skydiving. As an instructor, he has now completed over 7000 jumps worldwide. His vast experience has made him a respected figure within the industry, and he is currently the course director for the world's only commercial skydiving school in the Northern Hemisphere.

Helping Others Face Their Fears

Throughout his career, Chaffey has encountered many clients with a fear of skydiving. He believes that these clients are drawn to his instruction because of his proven ability to overcome his own severe phobia. For Chaffey, the most rewarding aspect of his work is the sense of empowerment that skydiving brings him. He hopes that one day, perhaps after his 10,000th jump, he will finally conquer his fear of heights.
