Butch Johnson: An American Archery Legend

Early Career

Butch Johnson, an American archer, first graced the Olympic stage in Barcelona 1992 at the age of 36. While he placed 18th individually and 6th in the team event, his Olympic journey was far from over.

Atlanta Glory: Team Gold

In Atlanta 1996, Johnson's career reached new heights as he anchored the victorious United States team to a gold medal alongside Rod White and Justin Huish. Notably, Johnson, then 40 years old, was as old as White (19) and Huish (21) combined. Individually, he finished a respectable 11th.

Continued Success: World and Olympic Medals

Johnson's success continued with a team bronze at the 1999 World Championships. At the Sydney Games in 2000, he once again contributed to the team's bronze medal performance alongside White and Vic Wunderle. In Athens 2004, the US team narrowly missed another podium finish, placing fourth in the team event.

Later Years: Senior Laurels

As the years passed, Johnson's experience and determination remained unyielding. In Beijing 2008, at the age of 52, he became the oldest participant in the Olympic archery competition. While his individual performance placed 28th, his contributions to the American team continued to inspire.

Legacy: Beyond Competition

Beyond his Olympic glory, Johnson has dedicated himself to promoting archery in Connecticut through his archery center. His passion for the sport and his record-breaking achievements have solidified his legacy as one of America's greatest archers.
