Biography of Camilla Horn
Camilla Horn was a German actress born in 1903 in Frankfurt am Main, Hessen, Germany. She was the daughter of a civil servant and initially trained and worked as a seamstress in Erfurt.
Early Career
Horn made her screen debut in 1921 with the film "Kean". In 1925, she starred in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's film adaptation of Molière's "Herr Tartüff". The following year, she worked with Murnau again in the adaptation of Goethe's "Faust", which became a breakthrough role for her and opened doors for her career, including opportunities in Hollywood.
Hollywood Success
In 1925, Horn appeared alongside Marlene Dietrich in Alexander Korda's drama "Madame wünscht keine Kinder". She then began receiving leading roles in German films such as "Die Frauengasse von Algier" and "Der fröhliche Weinberg". In 1928, she achieved further success when she was cast as the lead in the American melodrama "Tempest", starring opposite John Barrymore. The film won an Oscar for Best Art Direction.
Continued Success and Legacy
Horn's career continued to flourish, and in 1929, she reunited with Barrymore in Ernst Lubitsch's melodrama "Eternal Love". Known for her European charm, beauty, and youthful charm, Horn captivated audiences with her innocent gaze, delicate figure, and vibrant smile. She had a beautiful voice and graceful movements that made her irresistible.
In the 1930s, Horn returned to Europe and continued to appear in films in Germany and other European countries. She became a favorite of German, English, and Italian audiences. It is known that Horn did not support the rise of Nazism in Europe.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Horn appeared less frequently in films, and in 1970, she played her last role in Rudolf Lubowski's film "Immer bei Vollmond". By this time, her days of playing young and mischievous heroines were long gone. However, Horn did make a few more appearances on screen. At the age of 85, she could be seen in Peter Schamoni's comedy "Schloss Königswald" in 1988. In 1987, Horn received the Bavarian Film Awards.
Camilla Horn's filmography includes 70 films from both European and American productions. In her final years, she lived in Gilching near Starnberg, a small Bavarian town, and she passed away on August 14, 1996. She was laid to rest at Herrsching Cemetery.
