Camille Decoppet

Camille Decoppet (1858-1925) was a distinguished Swiss politician who served as the President of Switzerland and played a pivotal role in the modernization of the country's education system.

Early Life and Education

Decoppet was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1858. He pursued his legal studies at the University of Lausanne and was admitted to the bar in 1888.

Legal Career

After working as an attorney, Decoppet embarked on a career in public service. From 1890 to 1896, he served as a prosecutor and later returned to private practice from 1896 to 1900. During this period, he concurrently held the position of deputy judge at the Federal Court until 1912.

Political Involvement

Decoppet's political career spanned several levels of government. He was a member of the Lausanne City Council from 1898 to 1901, represented the Radical Democratic Party in the Cantonal Council of Vaud from 1897 to 1900, and served in the National Council, the Swiss parliament, from 1899 to 1912.

Education Reform

As a member of the State Council from 1900 to 1912, Decoppet played a key role in reforming the Swiss education system. He oversaw the revision of laws governing primary and secondary education and introduced a system of higher commercial courses at universities.

Presidency and International Recognition

In 1912, Decoppet was elected to the Federal Council, becoming the President of Switzerland in 1920. His presidency marked a period of significant social and economic progress, including the introduction of old-age pensions and health insurance.

Director of the Universal Postal Union

Beyond his political achievements, Decoppet also served as the Director of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) from 1919 until his death in 1925. Under his leadership, the UPU expanded its global reach and modernized its operations.
