She developed an interest in the profession when she watched her brother perform in a school production of the classic play "The King and I." Mulligan was born in Westminster, London, England. Her father, Stephen, was originally from Liverpool, while her mother, a college teacher named Nano, came from Wales. She has an older brother named Owen. When she was three years old, Mulligan's family moved from England to Germany as her father was offered a position to manage a chain of hotels in Europe. They lived in upscale hotels across Europe for eight years. Mulligan attended the International School of Dusseldorf with her brother and then transferred to Wallingham School in Surrey County. She was a reserved girl and was considered "one of the boys" in male-dominated groups until the age of fifteen. It was at this point that she became interested in acting after witnessing her brother's performance.

Early Career

Before embarking on her professional career, Mulligan secretly applied to local drama schools three times, but was rejected each time. According to the actress herself, these rejections helped her build resilience and determination. Mulligan's chosen path was strongly disapproved by her parents, who believed she should attend university and obtain a higher education. However, these obstacles only solidified her desire to pursue acting. In fact, Mulligan may eventually return to education as she has always had a passion for psychology and wishes to assist her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

In 2007, Mulligan made her television debut in projects such as "My Boy Jack" and "Northanger Abbey." She also made her Broadway debut in the play "The Seagull," which received positive reviews from theater critics. This role earned her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
