The Formative Years
Born in Germany, the talented landscape artist studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Under the tutelage of Julius Hübner, he honed his skills, later venturing to the Düsseldorf Academy to master the art of engraving under the guidance of Keller.
The Roman Interlude
In 1865, the artist embarked on a journey to Rome, where he spent several years immersed in the city's rich artistic heritage. He gained recognition for his exquisite etchings of three of Raphael's masterpieces: "La Messa di Bolsena," "La Giurisprudenza," and "The Stoning of Saint Stephen." These etchings became part of his acclaimed collection of 38 prints depicting the Vatican frescoes.
Academic Career and Legacy
Upon his return, the artist held a professorship at the Leipzig Academy, where he imparted his knowledge and skills to a new generation of artists. His influence extended beyond the classroom as his works continued to showcase his exceptional talent as a landscape painter, leaving an enduring legacy in the art world.
