Early Life and Education

Carl Bloch, a renowned Danish artist, commenced his artistic journey as a student under the tutelage of Wilhelm Marstrand at the esteemed Royal Danish Academy of Arts (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi).

Artistic Beginnings

Bloch's early endeavors focused on capturing the essence of rural landscapes and everyday life scenes. However, a transformative period ensued during his sojourn in Italy from 1859 to 1866. This profound experience ignited his passion for mythological subjects and laid the groundwork for his defining style.

Breakthrough with "Prometheus Unbound"

Bloch's artistic breakthrough arrived in 1865 with the unveiling of "Prometheus Unbound" in Copenhagen. This poignant depiction of the mythical figure cemented his reputation and marked a turning point in his career.

University and Palace Commissions

Following the passing of his mentor, Marstrand, Bloch was entrusted with completing the mural paintings adorning the ceremonial hall of Copenhagen University. This significant commission was followed by another prestigious project: 23 paintings commissioned for the chapel of Frederiksborg Palace.

The Frederiksborg Paintings

Spanning from 1865 to 1879, Bloch's evocative depictions of the life of Christ in the Frederiksborg Palace earned widespread acclaim. These iconic works transcended geographical and religious boundaries, becoming popular illustrations for Christian literature and even inspiring the creation of Mormon films, such as "The Testaments of One Fold and One Shepherd." The original paintings continue to reside within the hallowed halls of Frederiksborg Palace.
