Born into a musical family, the German pianist's journey began as an organist. He honed his skills under the tutelage of Günther Ramin, cantor of the renowned St. Thomas School in Leipzig. Subsequent organist positions in Flensburg and Verden laid the groundwork for his illustrious career.

Transition to the Piano: A Serendipitous Shift

In 1935, a fortuitous shift occurred. The pianist transitioned from the organ to the piano, where he found his true calling. His performances and recordings as a soloist, primarily featuring the works of Bach and Mozart, captivated audiences. He also formed a renowned duo with violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan.

Nurturing the Next Generation: Teacher and Mentor

Alongside his concert career, the pianist dedicated himself to nurturing young musicians. He held teaching positions in Kiel and Strasbourg before becoming a professor at the Freiburg Hochschule für Musik in 1964.
