Biography of Karl Theodor von Piloty
Karl Theodor von Piloty was a German artist who was born on October 1, 1826, in Munich, Bavaria. He came from a family of artists, with his father Ferdinand Piloty Senior (1786-1844) and his brother Ferdinand Piloty Junior (1828-1895) both being painters as well.
Early Career and Style
Piloty began his career as a genre painter and is considered one of the most significant representatives of realistic historical painting. His works were characterized by their detailed accuracy in depicting historical scenes and costumes.
Director of the Munich Academy
In 1874, Piloty was appointed as the director of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He was an ambitious teacher and had many notable pupils, including Franz von Lenbach, Franz Defregger, Rudolf Epp, Hans Makart, Wilhelm Leibl, Gabriel von Max, Georgios Jakobides, Rudolf von Seitz, and Eduard von Grützner.
Monumental Work: Allegory Monachia
Piloty's most monumental work is the "Allegory Monachia," which is considered the largest painting in Bavaria. It measures 15.30 x 4.60 meters and depicts 128 historical figures from the city of Munich. The painting was initially presented in the Munich city hall on July 21, 1879, but was later stored away in 1952. After undergoing restoration from 2000 to 2004, it was made accessible to the public on September 20, 2004.
