Early Life and Accession

Carlo Emanuele II, the Duke of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont, and later King of Cyprus and Jerusalem, was born in 1634 as the third son of Victor Amadeus I and Christine of France. As a maternal grandson of Henry IV of France, he inherited a lineage deeply rooted in European royalty. Upon the untimely death of his elder brother in 1638, Carlo Emanuele ascended to the throne of Savoy.

Marriages and Family

Carlo Emanuele II contracted two marriages throughout his life. His first union with Françoise Madeleine d'Orléans, the sister of King Louis XIV, proved short-lived. In 1666, he married Maria Giovanna Battista of Savoy-Nemours, who bore him his heir, the future Victor Amadeus II.

Political Landscape and Religious Persecutions

During Carlo Emanuele's reign, Savoy found itself overshadowed by the rising power of France. His mother, Christine, became the de facto ruler of the duchy, handling both internal and external affairs. Under her influence, Savoy carried out brutal persecutions of the Protestant Waldensian sect in 1655.

Consolidation of Power and Reforms

Upon his mother's death in 1663, Carlo Emanuele took full control of his realm. He pursued a policy of resistance against France's expansionist ambitions. Internally, he initiated significant reforms, including the creation of a standing army and the improvement of finances and foreign trade.

Military Campaigns and Legacy

Carlo Emanuele engaged in the Second Savoyard-Genoese War (1672-1673) in an attempt to secure access to the Mediterranean coast. While this conflict proved unsuccessful, he left a lasting legacy on Savoy's infrastructure. Under his orders, the Chemin des Grottes des Échelles was constructed, providing an important trans-Alpine route between Italy and France.

Honours and Affiliations

Carlo Emanuele II held prominent memberships in several prestigious orders of chivalry, including the Order of the Holy Annunciation, the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, and the Order of the Garter (England).
