Karlo Lukanov: A Prominent Bulgarian Political Figure
Early Life and EducationKarlo Lukanov was born on November 1st, 1897, in Pleven, Bulgaria. His father, Todor Lukanov, was an active social democrat. In 1917, Karlo joined the Bulgarian Workers' Social Democratic Party, which later became the Bulgarian Communist Party (BKP). He also attended the School for Reserve Officers and participated in World War I as a member of the 26th Artillery Regiment.
Legal Career and Imprisonment
In 1921, Lukanov graduated from the Faculty of Law at Sofia University and practiced law in Pleven. However, after the bombing of the Saint Nedelya Cathedral in 1925, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. He was later released under an amnesty in 1926.
International Experience and Military Service
Lukanov traveled to the Soviet Union and worked in a construction company from 1927 to 1944. He joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1936. In 1936, he went to Spain and joined the International Brigades, fighting for the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, he moved to Moscow and worked for the Comintern and later for the Bulgarian-language radio station "Hristo Botev" from 1941 onwards.
Return to Bulgaria and Government Service
Following the coup d'état of September 9th, 1944, Lukanov returned to Bulgaria and became the director of Bulgarian Radio. He later held various high-ranking positions, including Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Committee (1947-1949), Chairman of the Committee for Science, Art, and Culture (1949), Chairman of the State Planning Commission (1949-1952), and Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers (1952-1954).
Diplomatic Career and Honors
In 1954, Lukanov was elected to the Central Committee of the BKP, a position he held until his death. He served as Bulgaria's ambassador to the USSR, Mongolia, and Finland from 1954 to 1956. He then returned to Bulgaria as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Anton Yugov (1956-1962). Additionally, he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1956 to 1957. After leaving the government, he became Bulgaria's ambassador to Switzerland (1963-1966).
Legacy
Karlo Lukanov passed away on July 15th, 1982, in Sofia. He was awarded the Hero of Bulgaria honor for his contributions to the country. He was also part of a prominent dynasty of Bulgarian politicians, being the son of Todor Lukanov and the father of Andrey Lukanov, who became Prime Minister of Bulgaria in 1990.
