Biography of Carlos Ardila Lülle
Carlos Ardila Lülle is a Colombian entrepreneur, founder, and CEO of 'Organización Ardila Lülle', the largest Colombian conglomerate that controls companies such as RCN TV, 'Postobón, S.A.', and the football club 'Atlético Nacional'. His personal wealth exceeds one billion US dollars.
Early Life and Education
Carlos Ardila Lülle was born on July 4, 1931, in Bucaramanga, Colombia, known as the most beautiful city in Colombia. At the age of 15, Ardila Lülle completed his education at the Catholic school Colegio San Pedro Claver, which is still run by Jesuits. He then moved to Medellín and studied Civil Engineering at the School of Mines of the National University of Colombia, graduating in 1951.
Entrepreneurial Journey
Although Ardila Lülle was expected to become an engineer, he took over the 'Gaseosas LUX' soft drink company in Cali. He oversaw the production and expansion of the factory, where he met his future wife, Maria Eugenia Gaviria, the daughter of one of the company's owners. They have two sons, Carlos Julio and Antonio Jose, as well as two daughters, Maria Emma and Maria Eugenia.
Success with 'Gaseosas LUX' and Expansion
In 1954, Ardila Lülle achieved great success with the introduction of a new apple-flavored soft drink, becoming one of the first apple-flavored beverages in the world. The brand 'Postobón' became the flagship product of the company. Ardila Lülle's commercial success allowed him to acquire shares of 'Postobón, S.A.', a company producing another popular soft drink called 'Kola Champán'. After the merger of the two companies, Ardila Lülle became the president of 'Postobón, S.A.' in 1968.
Expansion into Other Industries
In the following decades, Ardila Lülle systematically acquired other Colombian companies in the soft drink industry, consolidating them under 'Postobón, S.A.'. His financial independence led him to invest in companies related to raw materials for beverages, including sugar production, forming his conglomerate 'Organización Ardila Lülle (OAL)'. He also turned his attention to the textile industry and acquired the nationwide radio station 'Radio Cadena Nacional' (RCN) in 1972. A year later, he purchased the record company 'Sonolux', and in 1978, he added RCN TV to his portfolio.
Later Ventures
Through his ownership of RCN TV, Ardila Lülle established it as one of the main television channels in the country. In 2008, a news channel called Nuestra Tele Noticias 24 Horas (NTN24) was launched as a spin-off from RCN TV. In the same year, Ardila Lülle acquired 'Coltejer', a leading textile company in Colombia, which was later sold to the Mexican business group 'Kaltex South America S.A.'. He also founded 'Leona Brewery' in 1994 and became the owner of the football club 'Atlético Nacional' in 1996, making 'Leona Brewery' their main sponsor until he sold the brewery to 'Bavaria Brewery'.
Recognition and Legacy
In 1998, Ardila Lülle faced a significant loss in his wealth due to the devaluation of the Colombian peso. However, his contributions to the Colombian economy and industry have been recognized by the government. He has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Colombian Order of Boyacá and the Order of Democracy of Simón Bolívar. He has been named Entrepreneur of the 20th Century by a council of Colombian business school deans and honored as an honorary citizen by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I.
