Carlos Arana Osorio served as President of Guatemala from July 1, 1970, to July 1, 1974.
Early Life and Military Career
Prior to his presidency, Arana Osorio commanded the military base in Zacapa. His brutal suppression of suspected guerrilla sympathizers earned him the nickname "Butcher of Zacapa."
Rise to Power
As a colonel in the Guatemalan Army, Arana Osorio seized power in a coup against President Julio César Méndez Montenegro. He established a state of siege during the first year of his presidency.
Harsh Rule
Arana Osorio's regime was marked by the persecution and displacement of indigenous Mayan populations. During his rule, an estimated 10% of parliamentarians were assassinated.
Legacy and Diplomatic Career
After leaving the presidency, Arana Osorio served as Guatemalan ambassador to Nicaragua. His tenure is remembered for its violence and authoritarianism, leading to the popular saying, "If necessary, I will turn the country into a cemetery, but I will bring peace."
