Early Life and Education
Rafael Carrera was born to an indigenous father in Guatemala. Despite his humble origins, he was a formidable leader who rose to power due to his charisma and military prowess.
Guatemala's Sovereignty
On April 17, 1839, Carrera proclaimed Guatemala a sovereign state, effectively ending the Federal Republic of Central America. Only El Salvador remained within the Federation.
Dictatorship and Religious Conservatism
Carrera's presidency was characterized by authoritarian rule and conservative religious policies. He suppressed dissent and enforced strict religious practices, earning him the title of "Regnante."
Exile and Return

Central American Conflicts
Carrera played a pivotal role in defeating attempts by Honduras and El Salvador to revive the Central American union. In 1863, he captured the Salvadoran capital, cementing Guatemala's dominance in the region.
Legacy
Rafael Carrera's controversial reign left a lasting impact on Guatemala. His military victories strengthened the country's independence, while his conservative policies shaped its religious and social landscape. Despite his dictatorial tendencies, he is remembered for his patriotism and the establishment of a stable government.
