Early Life and Political Career
Carlos Andres Perez was born in the town of Rubio in Venezuela to a family of ranch owners. From a young age, he was involved in politics and began his political career at the age of 15. He later became one of the founders of the Democratic Action party. Despite starting his studies at the Law Faculty of the Central University of Venezuela, Perez never completed his education as politics always took precedence.
Presidency and Controversies
Perez first assumed the presidency of Venezuela in 1974, during the height of the oil boom. He was re-elected by the Venezuelan people in 1989. However, his second term in office was marred by economic collapse, two attempted military coups, and the "Caracazo" - a violent civil uprising that was suppressed by the security forces with numerous civilian casualties. In 1993, Perez was removed from power on corruption charges and sentenced to 28 months of house arrest.
Political Comeback
After receiving support from voters in the state of Tachira in the previous year's parliamentary elections, Perez became a member of parliament and regained his freedom, along with parliamentary immunity. Refusing to accept the end of his political career, he declared his intention to join the "resistance movement" against President Hugo Chavez. Despite the challenges he faced, Perez even entertained the thought that Venezuelans, disillusioned with Chavez, would once again support him and elect him as president.
