Early Life and Education
Carlos Vila Nova was born in Nevés, a town on the northern coast of São Tomé Island. He went on to obtain a degree in telecommunications from the University of Oran, Algeria, in 1985.
Career in the Private Sector
After returning to São Tomé and Príncipe, Vila Nova headed the computer department of the National Statistical Office. In 1988, he left government service to become a sales manager at the Hotel Miramar, then the only hotel in the country. He was later appointed director of Hotel Miramar in 1992.
In 1997, Vila Nova became director of the Hotel Pousada Boa Vista and also established his own tourism agency, Mistral Voyages. He continued to work in the tourism industry until entering politics in 2010.
Political Career
Vila Nova entered politics in 2010 when he was appointed Minister of Public Works and Natural Resources in the cabinet of Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. He served in that role until the government lost its majority in 2012.
In 2014, when Trovoada's Independent Democratic Action (ADI) regained its majority, Vila Nova was appointed Minister of Infrastructure, Natural Resources, and Environment. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2018.
Presidential Election
In 2021, Vila Nova was nominated as the ADI candidate in the presidential election. On September 6, he was declared the winner, receiving 58% of the vote and defeating Guilherme Posser da Costa of the MLSTP/PSD.
Presidency
Vila Nova was inaugurated as President of São Tomé and Príncipe on October 2, 2021. He is the first president from the ADI party.
