Patrice Trovoada: A Political Force in São Tomé and Príncipe
Early Life and Political BeginningsBorn in Libreville, Gabon, Patrice Trovoada is the son of Miguel Trovoada, who served as President of São Tomé and Príncipe from 1991 to 2001. Trovoada's name pays homage to Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ministerial and Diplomatic Roles
Trovoada first served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of São Tomé and Príncipe from September 2001 to February 2002. Subsequently, he became an oil advisor to President Fradique de Menezes, until his dismissal in 2005 on allegations of corruption.
Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidacies
Trovoada contested the 2006 presidential election, securing 38.8% of the vote and narrowly losing to de Menezes. On February 14, 2008, he was appointed Prime Minister, but his tenure lasted only four months. After the National Assembly passed a vote of no confidence in his government, Trovoada resigned on June 22, 2008.
Second Prime Ministerial Term
Trovoada returned to lead the government of São Tomé and Príncipe on August 14, 2010. As the General Secretary of the Independent Democratic Action party, he remained in power for two and a half years until a parliamentary vote of no confidence in December 2012 forced his government's resignation.
Third and Fourth Terms as Prime Minister
Following his party's victory in the 2014 elections, Trovoada resumed the post of Prime Minister for a third time. After four years, he stepped down as head of government. However, in November 2022, his party once again won the elections, marking Trovoada's fourth term as Prime Minister.
