Carly Fleischmann: Overcoming Autism to Find Her Voice
Carly Fleischmann, a Canadian teenager diagnosed with autism, has defied the odds to find her own way to communicate with the outside world. With the help of her family, she has written a book with her father that focuses on autism. Born in 1995, Carly entered the world alongside her younger sister. Her parents realized something was amiss when Carly did not start speaking at the appropriate age. While her sister was already cracking jokes, Carly wore a puzzled expression on her face, as if questioning her purpose in life. Soon after, the word "autism" entered their home, bringing with it the devastating news that Carly would never be able to speak or communicate with the outside world. She seemed locked inside her own body, trapped in her own world.
A Determined Family
Carly's parents did not give up on her. Her father, Arthur, later revealed that they often felt discouraged as countless hours of therapy yielded no results. It became clear that Carly's conflict with the world was expressed in an unpleasant manner – she never stopped moving, never remained still, and constantly screamed. To make matters worse, she believed that the entire world was yelling at her. Even putting Carly to sleep was a challenging task for her parents, as she would not lie still and continued to scream. They had to physically hold her for hours until her exhausted body finally fell asleep.
A Breakthrough
However, when Carly turned 10, things started to get a little easier. One day, she approached the computer and wrote a message to her parents. It turned out that she had a toothache, but she did not know how to convey this to her parents – Carly only knew how to scream. When she wrote the three words "Help, my tooth hurts," everything fell into place. From that moment on, a strict yet effective rule was established regarding Carly – no one would listen to her screams. They would only communicate with her once she expressed her requests in writing. This marked a significant and serious turning point in Carly Fleischmann's life.
Finding Her Voice
Over time, Carly discovered her own unique way of communication. She began writing extensively and created a blog on the Internet. She also managed social media pages. Carly became a special ambassador for the terrifying condition known as "autism." She learned how to speak about her illness, evaluate her actions, and understand what, unfortunately, remains inaccessible to many individuals with autism. Together with her father, Carly even wrote a book titled "Carly's Voice," which received several awards and was featured in multiple festivals, including the video titled "Carly's Cafe."
A Silent Voice
Despite all her achievements, Carly never began to speak. Autism seemed to have locked her voice within herself. Recently, it was announced that Carly has been accepted as a student at the University of Toronto. On her Facebook page, she wrote, "I, Carly Fleischmann, a nonverbal individual, have been accepted into university. I would love to see the expression on the face of my elementary school teacher. She was convinced that I did not like her because I did not look at her. The moral of my story is that we are all capable of something."
