Carmen Phillips was an American actress and dancer who made a name for herself in the entertainment industry during the 1950s and 1960s.
Early Life and Career
Born in the United States, Carmen Phillips started her career in Los Angeles, where she met Ben Bard, a representative from '20th Century Fox'. She began studying acting at the studio's special school and quickly honed her skills. Over the next three years, Phillips performed on Broadway, impressing critics and audiences alike.
In 1956, she started earning a living by performing at the 'Chanteclair' cabaret in Baltimore. It was there that she caught the attention of journalist and columnist Walter Winchell. In early 1957, Phillips moved to New York, where she danced at the 'Latin Quarter'. She soon landed a role in Lou Walters' project, and by the end of 1957, she was already performing in Las Vegas. That same year, Phillips made her first foray into acting in the film 'Gala'.
In December 1957, Phillips and her mother moved to Los Angeles in search of a faster-paced lifestyle. It was there that she met Ben Bard again and continued her acting education at the studio's school. Walter Winchell later praised the school for its positive impact on Phillips' career, as she had a productive three years performing on Broadway.
Rise to Fame
In April 1958, Winchell announced that Phillips was a rising star, and she landed a role in 'Party Girl' produced by MGM. She portrayed a gangster's girlfriend in the film. In July of the same year, she had a small but notable role in 'Scamp'. However, her scenes in the film 'High School Confidential' were cut due to her co-star Jerry Lee Lewis marrying a 13-year-old girl.
Despite facing some setbacks, Phillips graduated from the studio school and continued to work with even more determination. Unfortunately, in August 1958, she was hospitalized due to an unidentified illness. She recovered quickly and resumed her work on the film 'Some Came Running' but was hospitalized again in December due to hearing problems. Nonetheless, she made a swift recovery and returned to the set. Director Vincente Minnelli was so impressed by her performance that he invited Phillips to join his new project, 'Bells Are Ringing'. However, she was removed from the film on the first day of shooting because some executives felt she was too sexually suggestive for the role.
Later Life and Activism
In March 1967, it was announced that Phillips was engaged to producer George Edwards. They had been dating for three years, and Phillips had appeared in his film 'Games'. However, their marriage was short-lived, and she later married David Mohr in 1968, but that relationship also ended in divorce.
As her acting career faded, Phillips found a new passion as an animal rights activist. She became actively involved in the movement and dedicated her time to fighting for the rights of animals. In the 1990s, Phillips lived in Murrieta, California, before returning to Hollywood.
On September 22, 2002, Carmen Phillips passed away in Hollywood, California, at the age of 65. She died from lung cancer.
