Carol Browner: A Trailblazing Advocate for Environmental Conservation
American lawyer, environmentalist, and entrepreneur Carol Browner served as the White House director of climate change and energy policy under the Obama administration. She co-founded a consulting firm with former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in 2001 and held board positions in numerous environmental organizations.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1951, Browner earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Florida in 1977 and a Juris Doctor from the same university's law school in 1979.
Career in Environmental Policy
In 1980-1981, Browner served as chief counsel for the Government Operations Committee in the Florida House of Representatives, working on a program to preserve Florida's recreational lands. She moved to Washington, DC, in 1983, becoming deputy director of the activist group Citizen Action, which focused on environmental issues.
As Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Browner played a pivotal role in protecting the environment during the Clinton administration. Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, she led the EPA in implementing ambitious initiatives such as:
- "Project XL": Allowed businesses to test alternative approaches to environmental compliance, promoting innovation and cost-effectiveness.
- "Brownfields Program": Encouraged the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated urban properties, creating jobs and revitalizing communities.

Browner married Michael Podhorzer in 1987 and later married Thomas Downey in 2007. She has received numerous awards for her environmental advocacy, including:
