Biography of John Howard

John Howard, a British philanthropist and lawyer, was born on September 2, 1726, in London. He is renowned for his humanitarian projects aimed at improving the lives of people, including his efforts in combating the plague and reforming the prison system. His contemporaries nicknamed him "Howard the Philanthropist".

The Shocking Conditions of Prisons

In 1773, Howard was elected as the sheriff of Bedford, and it was during this time that he was struck by the deplorable conditions in the local prison. Determined to bring about change, he embarked on a journey to inspect prisons across England and continental Europe. In 1777, he published a groundbreaking book titled "The State of Prisons in England and Wales", which shocked the minds of his contemporaries and prompted the humanization of the prison system. Additionally, Howard discovered a correlation between epidemics in cities and outbreaks of "prison fever". The poor hygiene in prisons led to the spread of diseases to the surrounding areas.

Battle Against the Plague

Howard also dedicated himself to studying quarantine measures and combating the plague. In 1785, he embarked on a dangerous journey across Southern Europe, inspecting quarantine stations and visiting hospitals with plague patients. He sought advice from local doctors, prepared by British infectious disease specialists. His report, "An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe, with Various Observations Relating to the Plague", played a significant role in the development of infectious medicine.

Epidemic in Kherson

In 1790, Howard arrived in Kherson, which was then part of Russia, to combat a typhus epidemic. He had plans to visit several locations in Crimea but unfortunately contracted the disease, most likely from his patients. Despite the efforts of Prince Potemkin's personal physician, Howard could not be saved.

Legacy

John Howard passed away on January 20, 1790. He was buried in Kherson, where a memorial was erected in his honor. A bronze statue commemorating John Howard is also located in Bedford.
