Early Life and Education
Élisabeth Borne was born on April 18, 1961, in Paris, France. Her parents were Joseph Borne, a biochemist, and Marguerite Lhopitalier, a pharmacist. Borne earned her baccalaureate from Lycée Marie Curie in Sceaux and went on to study economics and law at the University of Paris X - Nanterre. She then obtained a master's degree in law from the University of Poitiers.
Early Career
After graduating, Borne worked as an urban planner for the City of Paris and then as a consultant for the public transport authority. In 2004, she joined the Socialist Party and became the general manager of the water consortium for the Barousse Valley, Comminges, and Save River in the Midi-Pyrénées region.
Political Career
In 2008, Borne was elected mayor of Martres-Tolosane. Two years later, she became vice-president of the regional council of Midi-Pyrénées. In 2012, she was elected as a deputy to the National Assembly for the 8th constituency of Haute-Garonne.
In 2014, Borne was appointed Secretary of State for Trade, Crafts, Consumption, and Social and Solidarity Economy in Prime Minister Manuel Valls's government. She held this position until 2015, when she resigned to focus on the regional elections for the newly merged region of Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées.
President of the Occitanie Region
In 2016, Borne was elected president of the newly formed regional council of Occitanie. In this role, she oversaw the region's economic development, infrastructure, and environmental policies.
Leadership in the Socialist Party
In 2017, Borne was elected to the provisional collegiate leadership of the Socialist Party. She remained a prominent figure within the party, advocating for social justice and economic reform.
President of the Regions of France
In 2021, Borne was elected president of the Regions of France association, a body representing the regions of metropolitan France. In this capacity, she played a key role in coordinating regional policies and promoting decentralization.
Prime Minister of France
On May 16, 2022, Élisabeth Borne was appointed Prime Minister of France by President Emmanuel Macron. She became the second woman to hold the position, after Édith Cresson. Borne's priorities as Prime Minister include strengthening the economy, addressing climate change, and promoting social justice.
