Biography of Carole Feuerman

Carole Feuerman is a contemporary American sculptor known for her hyperrealistic style. She is best known for her sculptures of "wet people," which depict individuals who have recently been in water. Feuerman's sculptures are incredibly lifelike, often indistinguishable from photographs of real people.

Early Career and Style

Carole Feuerman spends several months working on each of her sculptures, achieving an unreal level of realism. Many of her subjects are swimmers and bathers, captured in moments just after emerging from the water. One distinctive feature of Feuerman's work is the vibrant swim caps that adorn the heads of her sculptures. Whether it's children, athletic women, or young men, all of her sculptures are meticulously detailed, complete with glistening droplets of water running down their bodies.

Feuerman creates her sculptures using plaster as the base material, then applying resin and multiple layers of oil paint to achieve their hyperrealistic appearance. However, she doesn't limit herself to creating only "wet people." Her body of work includes a variety of other sculptures as well.

Carole Feuerman's first exhibition took place in 1987 at the Queens Museum of Art. In 2000, she had another retrospective exhibition at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Her sculpture "Zeus and Hera" became a part of the permanent collection at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey, in 2006.

In 2007, Feuerman had a solo exhibition titled "By the Sea," followed by the show "Lust & Desire." Later that same year, her work was displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In 2011, the Carole A. Feuerman Sculpture Foundation was established, and Feuerman also founded Feuerman Studios Inc.

Feuerman's sculptures can be found in the private collections of notable figures such as Emperor Akihito of Japan, former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and former Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev. Her works have been exhibited in prestigious museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Venice Biennale, and the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.
