Biography of Stanislovas Kuzma

Stanislovas Kuzma (born May 7, 1947, Panevezys) is a Lithuanian sculptor, known for his famous sculptural works and monuments. He is the laureate of the Republican Prize of the Lithuanian SSR (1982) and the National Prize of Lithuania (1996), a distinguished artist of Lithuania (1987), and a recipient of the Order of Gediminas.

Early Life and Education

Kuzma studied at the 2nd and 5th secondary schools in Siauliai. From the age of eleven, he attended the M.K. Ciurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius (now the M.K. Ciurlionis National Art Gymnasium), and later studied at the State Art Institute of the Lithuanian SSR (Vilnius; now the Academy of Art). After graduating from the institute in 1973, he worked as a teacher there (1973-1976; 2000-2001).

Career

Since 1974, Kuzma has participated in exhibitions in Lithuania, Russia, Germany, Austria, Estonia, and other countries. He has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Union since 1976. One of his notable works is the sculptural piece "City Guard," depicting a knight in armor with a spear, which was installed in 1973 on the corner building of Traku and Pilimo Streets in Vilnius.

He is known for sculptural works such as "Celebration of the Muses" and "Spring" (National Drama Theatre of Lithuania, 1981), "Egle and Zilvinas" (Yuknaiciai, 1981-1982), "Youth" (Yuknaiciai, 1983), "Archer" (Siauliai, 1986), "Vision" (National Drama Theatre of Lithuania, 1981), "Pietà" (Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius, 1995). The decorative sculpture "Sutartine" is installed in the courtyard of the Reval Hotel Lietuva in Vilnius. He also played a significant role in the restoration of the figures of St. Stanislaus, St. Helena, and St. Casimir (works by Karolis Elska) on the facade of the Cathedral in Vilnius (1989).

He is the author of the monument to the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, Alexander, in Panevezys, unveiled on the city's anniversary on September 7, 2003 (granite, height 0.57 m; architect Valdas Klimavicius). He also created the monument "Amneris" - a funerary monument to the Lithuanian opera diva Birute Almonaite (Antakalnis Cemetery, 2005) in the image of the character from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida," as well as wooden chamber sculptures "Vision" (1977), "Litovka" (1979), "Professor V. Sirvidis" (1980), "Legend" (1984), and others.

His works are installed in Palanga and other cities in Lithuania, and are held in the Art Museum of Lithuania in Vilnius, Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Olympic Museum in Lausanne, and other museum collections.
