Early Life and CareerCaroline Mary Aherne, a British comedic actress and screenwriter, was born on December 24, 1963 in London. She grew up in Wythenshawe, Manchester, where she developed a passion for acting and comedy. Aherne had a unique talent for impersonations from a young age, successfully mimicking singers and actresses. She even won a special prize at a summer camp competition for her performances. Aherne studied drama at Liverpool John Moores University and later secured a job as a secretary at the BBC. However, her true aspiration was to become a screenwriter or investigative journalist.
The Mrs Merton Show and The Royle Family
Aherne began her collaboration with co-writer Craig Cash at a radio station in Stockport, where they created numerous characters for radio shows. One of their most popular creations was Mrs Merton, a polite journalist who hosted an advice column. With the help of Cash and other writers, Mrs Merton came to life and Aherne portrayed her on The Mrs Merton Show, which aired on BBC from 1995 to 1998. The show garnered a massive following and allowed Aherne to interview guests with unexpected and often provocative questions. The character's popularity led to advertisements for British Gas and the spin-off sitcom, Mrs Merton and Malcolm, in 1999.
During this time, Aherne also made her television debut as a neighbor in Frank Sidebottom's Fantastic Shed Show in 1992. In addition, she appeared in the award-winning sketch comedy show The Fast Show from 1994 to 2000, showcasing her versatility and comedic talent in various roles.
Aherne's collaboration with Cash and Henry Normal resulted in the creation of The Royle Family, a sitcom centered around the lives of a working-class family in Manchester. Later Career and Personal Life
After a falling out with Cash, Aherne left the project Early Doors in 2003 due to script issues. She faced struggles with depression and intrusive media attention, prompting her to leave Britain and relocate to Sydney, Australia. There, she collaborated on the script for the Australian series Dossa and Joe. While the show received critical acclaim, it struggled with low ratings, and Aherne eventually returned to Britain.
Despite the challenges she faced, Aherne continued to avoid the media's attention and made appearances in special Christmas episodes of The Royle Family. Throughout her career, Aherne showcased her exceptional talent as both a writer and actress, leaving a lasting impact on British comedy.
