The Inspiring Transformation of Carolyn Broomfield
Carolyn Broomfield, a 59-year-old Australian personal trainer, is a testament to the fact that it's never too late to get in shape. Once indulging in four glasses of wine each evening, Carolyn managed to shed an astounding 30 kilograms by ditching her nightly "alcohol top-ups" and embracing workouts three times a week.

From Self-Conscious to Strong
Carolyn Broomfield, a grandmother from the Gold Coast, became a personal trainer and opened her own gym after losing 30 kilograms in just 10 months. The catalyst for her incredible transformation? A pair of size 24 pants. In her younger years, Carolyn enjoyed an active lifestyle, playing hockey and engaging in athletics. However, as she entered her fifties, the mother of three began experiencing menopausal symptoms, and her weight spiraled.

A Downward Spiral
Carolyn's weight gain perpetuated a vicious cycle. Feeling increasingly self-conscious about her appearance, she overate and drank excessively. "Once I started gaining weight, I started to have really distorted body thoughts," Carolyn admitted. "The more depressed I got, the more I ate. I started drinking a lot because of the depression." The Australian woman would consume three to four glasses of wine before bedtime, which she claimed helped suppress her negative thoughts and distracted her from "all that exercise."

A Wake-Up Call
"I hated going out," Carolyn remarked. "I just felt so uncomfortable in my own skin." Eventually, Broomfield tipped the scales at 115 kilograms. One day, she purchased a pair of navy blue size 24 pants, and something inside her snapped.

A New Chapter
This was a pivotal moment for Carolyn. Around this time, she had just become a grandmother and had also lost a friend to breast cancer at the young age of 47. "I realized I definitely had to do something otherwise I was going to end up dead before my time," Carolyn said. Determined to make a change, Broomfield never wore those size 24 pants. Instead, she joined a gym and embarked on a rigorous routine with a personal trainer three times a week. She focused on strength training and weightlifting, incorporating running and boxing into her schedule.

Healthy Habits
The grandmother of four began meal prepping two weeks in advance, replaced alcohol with soda water, and eliminated sugar and processed foods from her diet.

Overcoming Gym Intimidation
Initially, the gym terrified Carolyn. She felt like an "elephant" working out alongside young, toned women. "I was an absolute fish out of water," the Australian said. "I was a 40-something-year-old in a gym with 20-year-old girls with beautiful, perfect bodies."

"It was quite confronting to put myself out of my comfort zone and do something completely out of character. I realized how hard it is," she added.

A Sense of Accomplishment
But amidst the awkwardness, Carolyn also experienced a newfound sense of fulfillment. She loved the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that washed over her after a grueling workout. When her personal trainer suggested she pursue a personal training qualification, Broomfield jumped at the opportunity and worked diligently until she earned her certificate. The victory was even sweeter as Carolyn was the "oldest chick" in her class.
Nutrition Knowledge
The Australian grandmother also delved into the world of nutrition. She became a certified weight loss consultant and qualified to provide dietary coaching.
Opening Her Own Gym
After working at a commercial gym for several years, Carolyn decided it was time to go out on her own. She had witnessed firsthand the apprehension and discomfort experienced by older women in "young, fit" gym environments. "I saw a niche in the market there," Broomfield said. "Older ladies were often scared because they didn't know where to start."
"They wanted to lose weight, but they had no idea how to go about it. Since I'd been through that journey myself, I felt like I could help them."
"I could help these women get their mojo back and feel good about themselves again," she explained.
A Sanctuary for Mature Women
Today, Broomfield works with women in their thirties, forties, and fifties at her own fitness center, New Horizon Fitness. Nestled on two acres of private gardens on the Gold Coast, the gym is designed to provide a non-intimidating environment where mature women can feel comfortable exercising.
Carolyn prioritizes creating a "humble, happy" atmosphere for her clients and takes a personal interest in every woman who walks through her doors.
Maintaining Her Transformation
Broomfield still sees her personal trainer twice a week, cycles, and enjoys boxing. The Australian grandmother eats five to six small meals a day, focusing on protein intake. She allows herself one or two glasses of wine, but only on weekends.
"I don't get puffed out anymore, and I've come off sleeping tablets," Carolyn said. "And I can chase around after my grandkids as much as I want."
"I can get on the back of my husband's motorbike and feel less anxious. I think exercising has helped me with my emotions and my mood."
