Biography of Casey Fenton

American entrepreneur and traveler Casey Fenton is the founder of one of the world's largest social networks, Couchsurfing.org. This platform allows travelers to find free accommodation in new countries and cities, connecting them with locals who are willing to share their homes.

Casey Fenton

Early Life and Education

Casey Fenton was born in 1978 in Conway, New Hampshire, to a hippie family. Growing up, Fenton was taught the value of helping others without expecting anything in return. This belief would later inspire the creation of Couchsurfing.org. After completing high school, Fenton moved to California to attend Evergreen State College. However, his relationship with his high school sweetheart didn't work out, leading Fenton to embark on a journey of self-discovery through travel.

The Iceland Trip

During his travels across America, Fenton had a dream of visiting Iceland. He had already bought a ticket, but realized he didn't have enough money for accommodation. Fenton quickly came up with a solution by contacting students at an Icelandic university through their email database. To his surprise, he received responses from several students who not only agreed to host him but also created a detailed schedule for him to move from one home to another. This experience became the catalyst for the CouchSurfing Project.

The Creation of Couchsurfing.org

Inspired by his positive experiences in Iceland, Casey Fenton, along with a few friends, founded Couchsurfing.org. The website allowed travelers to find free short-term accommodation in different countries. As the project had no financial backing, its success relied on the experiences and testimonials of the travelers themselves. The website's pilot version launched in 2003 and quickly gained thousands of users.

The Couchsurfing Experience

To stay at someone's home, users had to send a message introducing themselves, sharing their life story, and their plans in the new country. While no monetary payments were allowed, it was recommended that travelers bring souvenirs from their home country to repay the kindness of their hosts. As the platform grew in popularity, safety concerns arose. To address this, the website introduced a review system and required users to provide a phone number.

The Impact and Continued Work

Casey Fenton continues to work on the Couchsurfing project and spends a significant amount of time traveling. Thousands of people connect daily through the website, and the total number of users has reached 6 million from 100,000 cities worldwide. Fenton believes that "one journey can change you, and thousands of journeys can change the world."
