Catarina Martins: Portuguese Theatrical and Political Force

Born to mathematics teachers, Catarina Martins was immersed in a world of education and social justice from a young age. After briefly teaching in Cape Verde, she embarked on her academic journey.

Academic and Theatrical Pursuits

Martins studied law at the University of Coimbra before pursuing a master's degree from the University of Porto. Her doctoral studies in languages and contemporary literature at the Open University in Lisbon led her to a passion for theater. She co-founded the avant-garde Companhia de Teatro de Visões Úteis, a troupe with which she collaborated for 15 years.

Political Activism and Election to Parliament

As an activist for the Left Bloc, Martins became involved in politics. In 2009, she was elected to parliament as the first Left Bloc representative from Porto. She was re-elected in 2011 and 2015.

Co-Leadership of the Left Bloc

On November 11, 2012, Martins and João Semedo were elected as co-chairs of the Left Bloc, replacing its original leader, Francisco Louçã. When Semedo stepped down in 2013, Martins became the party's sole "coordinator" and "spokesperson."

Political Influences and Recognition

Martins draws inspiration from African revolutionary Amilcar Cabral. She has been recognized by Politico Europe as one of 28 individuals from 28 different countries who are "shaping policy and shaking up Europe."
