Blessed Caterina Mattei of Raconigi

Early Life

Blessed Caterina Mattei was born in the impoverished commune of Raconigi, Italy, as the sixth child of unemployed mechanic Giorgio Mattei and weaver Billia Ferrari. From a tender age of five, she experienced visions of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Catherine of Siena.

Religious Life

As a young woman, Caterina joined the Dominican Order as a tertiary. She embraced an ascetic lifestyle, intensifying the frequency of her visions. Consequently, she acquired numerous stigmata, visible only to herself until after her passing. Caterina also devotedly prayed for the salvation of soldiers lost in battle.

Miracles and Devotion

Throughout her life, Blessed Caterina drew an endless stream of devotees seeking spiritual guidance and intercession. While revered by many, she also faced jealousy and persecution. Despite these trials, she remained steadfast in her faith. Numerous miracles were attributed to Caterina, both during her lifetime and after.

Death and Legacy

Caterina passed away in solitude. In her will, she requested that her body be buried in Cuneo, which was honored. Her remains have become a site of pilgrimage.

Beatification and Sainthood

Beatification

In 1808, Pope Pius VII beatified Caterina Mattei, recognizing her exemplary life of holiness and miracles.

Feast Day

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Blessed Caterina Mattei on September 4th.
