Early Life and Circus BeginningsCaterine Valente was born into a nomadic Italian circus family on July 14, 1931. Her mother was a clown and her father was an accordionist. Young Caterine grew up in the vibrant circus environment and joined the performers at an early age.
Breakthrough with Kurt Edelhagen
By the early 1950s, Valente had established herself as a singer in Europe. Her international fame, however, took off when she joined Kurt Edelhagen's orchestra as a vocalist in Germany. This led to a recording contract with Polydor and the release of her first singles in 1953.
International Hits
Valente's breakthrough singles were "Malagueña" and "Andalucia," composed by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona. "Malagueña" became an instant hit in continental Europe, the United Kingdom, and eventually the United States. "Andalucia," re-released as "The Breeze and I" in English, also topped the charts in both the UK and the US.
Multilingual Stardom
Valente's talent and popularity transcended language barriers. She recorded hits in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. In Italy, she charted with songs like "Till," "Personalita," and "Nessuno al Mondo." In Germany, she became a beloved figure with "Ganz Paris Träumt von der Liebe," "Wo Meine Sonne Scheint," and "Steig in das Traumboot der Liebe." Her French-language hits included "Bimbombey," "39 Fievere," and "Saiton-Jamais."
