Early Life and Education

Born on December 14, 1960, in Charleston, South Carolina, the astronaut attended W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia, and graduated in 1978. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1983. Subsequently, she obtained a Doctorate in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1991.

Academic and Research Career

Prior to joining NASA, she conducted research on polymer synthesis at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1983 to 1988. She later worked at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as a contractor for the United States Air Force in their chemistry laboratory from 1988 to 1992.

Astronaut Selection and Training
In March 1992, the astronaut joined NASA's Astronaut Corps.
Space Missions
- STS-73 (1995): Specialist, 15 days 2 hours 52 minutes 21 seconds
- STS-93 (1999): Specialist, 4 days 22 hours 49 minutes 35 seconds

Across her two missions aboard the Columbia spacecraft, she accumulated a total of 20 days 01 hour 41 minutes 54 seconds in space. She also served as a backup flight specialist for STS-83.

Recognition and Awards

The astronaut was awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal for her contributions to space exploration in 1995 and 1999.
