Childhood and Early Life

Katherine Hanna Kim was born on May 19, 1984, in Queens, New York City, to Korean parents. Raised with her younger brother, Joe, Kim grew up in a Korean-speaking household. From a young age, she showed a passion for the arts, starting with singing Korean songs her grandfather played. Despite her shyness, Kim's teachers recognized her emotional range and gave her the lead role in a William Shakespeare play in elementary school.

Modeling and Education

In addition to acting, Kim pursued modeling. She competed in the Cinderella beauty pageant in 1993 and later signed with agencies for print ads. In 2002, she won Miss Tennessee and placed third in Miss Virginia four years later. Kim earned a degree in journalism from Belmont University and later studied drama and psychology at the University of Virginia.

Acting Debut and Early Roles

Kim's first film role came in college, but she missed the shoot due to pneumonia. She made her official film debut in 2007 with small roles in popular series such as "Gossip Girl" and "90210." She also appeared in feature films like "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past."

Breakthrough in "Mistresses"

In 2013, Kim attended a Los Angeles showcase where Lupita Nyong'o and Chadwick Boseman were discovered. This led to her casting in a recurring role in "Mistresses," a drama about four women's personal lives. Kim played Anna Choi, a patient of Dr. Karen Kim (Kim Yoon-jin).

Continued Success and Leading Role

Despite "Mistresses," Kim's career did not immediately skyrocket. She continued to land supporting roles in TV and film. The success of "Crazy Rich Asians" in 2018 increased the visibility of Asian-American actors, which benefited Kim. In 2019, she played a recurring role in "Ballers" and joined "FBI" in 2020. In 2023, Kim secured her first starring role in "Dirty Games," a series about a CIA operative's forbidden love with a con artist.

Personal Life

Kim dated music executive Brad Lawler for two years before their split in 2020. Currently based in Los Angeles, Kim enjoys traveling, animals, and spending time with her mother and brother. She lost her father in 2021.
