Early Life and Education
Katherine McKenna was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and is the eldest of four children. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School and subsequently pursued higher education at the University of Toronto. She then studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science and McGill University, earning a law degree with a specialization in human rights and social justice.
Legal Career
McKenna practiced law at leading firms in Indonesia, focusing on international trade, competition, investment, and constitutional law. Her legal expertise laid the foundation for her future political career.
Parliamentary Career
Election to Parliament (2015)In the 2015 federal election, McKenna was elected to the House of Commons of Canada, defeating the incumbent New Democratic Party MP Paul Dewar. She earned 43% of the vote compared to Dewar's 38%.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change (2015-2019)
On November 4, 2015, McKenna was appointed Minister of Environment and Climate Change in Justin Trudeau's government. In this role, she played a pivotal role in shaping Canada's environmental and climate policies.
Minister of Infrastructure and Communities (2019-2021)
In 2019, McKenna was re-elected to the House of Commons and was subsequently appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. In this capacity, she oversaw major infrastructure projects and initiatives.
Retirement from Politics (2021)
In June 2021, McKenna announced that she would not seek re-election in the next federal election and would step down from her ministerial post. Her seat in Ottawa Center was subsequently filled by her party colleague and former Ontario Attorney General, Yasir Naqvi.
