Biography of Katie Curtis

Katie Curtis is an American folk singer-songwriter. She was born and raised in Saco, Maine. Initially, Katie was interested in playing the drums, but later she decided to switch to the acoustic guitar, which she still plays today.

She studied at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. To support herself, she worked as a waitress and social worker, and performed in local coffee shops in the evenings. In the early 90s, Katie decided to pursue a career in music and moved to Boston, Massachusetts.

Currently, she resides in Newton, Massachusetts, with her partner and two children. Katie's musical journey began in 1992 when she started touring the country, playing in clubs and coffee shops to promote her albums. She participated in several major projects such as the annual "Newport Folk Festival" and the popular women's music festival "Lilith Fair". During this time, most of her work was released under the independent record label Rykodisc, and she now collaborates with Compass Records.

According to Katie, the constant touring period lasted for fourteen years. Her established reputation allowed her to transition to a more settled lifestyle. Katie quickly gained fame for her distinctive and emotive voice, as well as her poignant lyrics. She regularly supported the careers of young musicians, including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucy Kaplansky, and Bonnie Raitt.

Katie's songs have been featured in several well-known TV series, including "Alias," "Dawson's Creek," "Felicity," and "Chicago Hope," as well as in films. Her self-titled album, released in 1997, won the "Best Album" award at the Gay and Lesbian American Music Awards. In 2005, she won the top prize at the International Songwriting Competition with Mark Erelli for the song "People Look Around," written in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. She is also the recipient of the 2002 Boston Music Award.

A documentary film titled "Tangled Stories," directed by Robert Mills in 2006, was dedicated to Katie's biography, but for unknown reasons, it was never released. To date, Katie has recorded 11 albums, with her latest release being "Sweet Life" in 2008.
