Casey Zavala: Blending Tapestry and Painting

American artist Casey Zavala blurs the lines between tapestry and painting in her innovative artwork. Employing thread and needle instead of paint and canvas, she creates intricate portraits that resemble oil paintings.

Developing a Unique Technique

Through years of practice, Zavala has honed her distinctive style, coining it "thread painting." Unlike traditional painting, she cannot manually mix colors or use many common techniques. Instead, she has developed a meticulous system of layering stitches that produce specific hues and shades.

Mimicking Oil Painting

"Over many years, I developed a stitching method that allows me to blend colors and create tonalities. It parallels the techniques used in classical oil painting," Zavala explains. "The direction of the thread strokes mimics how a brush would apply paint to depict the volume, depth, and form of a subject."

The Reverse Side: An Abstract Masterpiece

Zavala's portraits offer an intriguing duality. The reverse sides of her works present a tapestry of tangled threads and knots, resembling abstract versions of the front. She further enhances this interplay by painting large-scale gouache paintings of the backs of her embroidered portraits.

Upcoming Exhibition

This December, Zavala's work will be showcased at the Lyons Wier Gallery in Miami. Explore a selection of her creations from the past two years below.
