Cecilia "Dolly" Michel Boarman, 102-Year-Old College Graduate

At the age of 102, Cecilia "Dolly" Michel Boarman, a Kentucky native, proudly received her college diploma, nearly 60 years after first enrolling in university.

Early Beginnings

Boarman embarked on her higher education journey in 1957 at the age of 40. However, life circumstances required her to leave Brescia University in Kentucky before completing her studies.

Honorary Degree and Recognition

Despite the long delay, Boarman's dedication to education was recognized when she was awarded an honorary degree. She exclaimed, "I'm so excited because I finally got my diploma after all these years."

University's Recognition

Boarman became the oldest living graduate of Brescia University. Her alma mater learned about her achievement through her daughter, Joetta Boarman Fine. Fine shared her mother's story with Tracy Naylor, a university administrator.

Honorary Degree Request

Naylor reached out to Cheryl Clemons, Brescia University's vice president of academic affairs, to request an honorary degree for Boarman. The request was granted.

Early Education and Career

Boarman graduated from high school in 1931. While pursuing her university studies, she gained teaching experience. She later became a Catholic school teacher and continued working as a substitute teacher after retirement.

Family's Joy

Fine expressed her family's delight at her mother's honorary degree. "We've been telling everybody about it," she said. "It was such a nice thing for the university to do."
