Kees de Wolf: A Dutch Footballing Legend
Early Life and CareerBorn on December 17, 1945, in Purmerend, Netherlands, Kees de Wolf began his footballing journey in his hometown with the amateur club Purmerend. His exceptional skills soon caught the attention of Amsterdam giants Ajax.
Ajax Debut and European Success
In 1966, de Wolf joined Ajax, initially serving as a reserve to the legendary Piet Keizer. On December 7 of that year, he made his unforgettable debut in the European Cup (now Champions League) against Liverpool FC. Amidst a thick fog at Amsterdam's Olympic Stadium, Ajax triumphed 5-1, with de Wolf scoring the opening goal.
Eredivisie Breakthrough
De Wolf made his Eredivisie debut on December 11 against ADO, but Ajax suffered a 2-0 defeat. However, in his second league appearance, he netted a goal in a 4-1 victory over Xerxes.
American Adventure
In 1968, de Wolf embarked on a brief sojourn in the United States, joining the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League. The team boasted a predominantly Dutch contingent, including forwards Alphonsus Stoffels and Chris Bahoefner, and midfielder Ron Foster. De Wolf made nine appearances and scored three goals.
Return to the Netherlands
Upon his return to the Netherlands, de Wolf spent the 1970/1971 season with Haarlem. He then played for Medemklikker MFC in the amateur ranks before retiring as a footballer and pursuing a career in sales.
Tragic Passing
Kees de Wolf passed away on July 22, 2011. His legacy as a skillful forward who graced the fields of Amsterdam and beyond will forever be remembered in the annals of Dutch football.
