Early Life and Education
Cemile Yusuf was born on May 5, 1978, in Leverkusen, Germany, to Turkish immigrant parents who had arrived in the mid-1970s from Greece. Shortly after her birth, her parents sent her to live with her uncle in Greece. She returned to Germany at the age of two. Yusuf holds dual citizenship in Germany and Greece. She has a brother.
After completing high school in Leverkusen, Yusuf studied at the University of Bonn.
Political Career
During her university studies, Yusuf became actively involved in the Turkish-German Forum, an organization affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In 2008, she was elected Vice-Chair of the Turkish-German Forum in North Rhine-Westphalia. Yusuf was also active in several other local organizations and in the Aachen city administration.
In 2013, Yusuf was nominated as a candidate for the Bundestag. She won the party's primary election and went on to victory in the general election: in the single-member constituency of Hagen - Ennepe-Ruhr I, Yusuf came second (34.1% of votes), behind Social Democrat René Röspel (47.1%). However, she ultimately entered parliament via the CDU's state list. She became the first Muslim member of the CDU to be elected to the Bundestag.
