Biography of César-François Cassini

César-François Cassini was a French astronomer and geodesist, born on June 17, 1714. Coming from a family of astronomers, with both his father and grandfather also practicing the same profession, it was no surprise that César followed in their footsteps. He succeeded his father as the director of the Paris Observatory, a position that had been held by his ancestors and descendants for 124 years, from the establishment of the observatory until the time of the French Revolution.

One of César-François Cassini's major accomplishments was the compilation of the first complete topographic map of France. He began this monumental task in 1747, aiming to create a large-scale map of the country with a scale of 1:86,400.
