Cesare Battisti: From Revolutionary to Author
Early Life and ActivismCesare Battisti, an Italian writer and revolutionary, was a member of the far-left organization Armed Proletarians for Communism, which espoused autonomist Marxism. Accused of involvement in murders committed during the late 1970s, Battisti fled Italy and currently resides in Brazil as a political refugee.
Exile and Literary Career
After the assassination of Aldo Moro in 1978, Battisti abandoned extremism. Blaming the "Red Brigades" for their hierarchical and centralist tendencies, his organization had previously condemned them. Battisti then sought refuge in France under the "Mitterrand Doctrine." He later resided in Oaxaca, Mexico, where he began his writing career under the guidance of author Paco Ignacio Taibo II.
Arrest and Political Asylum
On March 18, 2007, Brazilian and French authorities arrested Battisti in Rio de Janeiro. However, Brazil's Ministry of Justice granted him political asylum. The Supreme Court of Brazil initially upheld his asylum status, but reversed it on November 18, 2009, ordering his extradition to Italy.
Presidential Intervention and Release
On the last day of his presidency, December 31, 2010, President Lula da Silva denied Italy's extradition request for Battisti. He was released on June 9, 2011.
Literary Recognition
In the literary world, Battisti is renowned for his detective fiction novels.
