Education and Early Career

Charles Clarke was born in 1950 and attended Highgate School in London. He earned degrees in Mathematics and Economics from King's College, Cambridge. In 1980, he entered politics by joining the Labour Party. In the London Borough of Hackney, he chaired the Housing Committee and oversaw economic development until 1986.

Local Government and Party Leadership

In the early 1990s, Clarke served as Chief of Staff to Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1997.

Government Positions

Since October 2002, Clarke has held various government positions, including Secretary of State for Education and Skills. In late 2004, he was appointed Home Secretary.

Immigration Controversy

Clarke's tenure as Home Secretary has been marked by controversy over immigration. His statement that the "country needs more immigration" drew criticism from both the opposition and within the Labour Party. Prime Minister Tony Blair had previously stated that immigration would be reduced.

Policy Changes

In response to public concerns, Clarke has announced plans to "toughen up" immigration policy.
