Early Life and Musical BeginningsReginald Draper was born into a musical family in 1869. Despite the early loss of his father, a renowned cellist, young Draper found a mentor in his older brother, Paul, who imparted the basics of clarinet playing.
Artistic Transformation
In 1888, Draper commenced formal training under Henry Lazarus at the Royal College of Music. However, it was his encounter with Manuel Gomez's Böhm system clarinet that profoundly influenced his artistic direction. Embracing this innovation, Draper's playing transformed, exhibiting exceptional richness of tone and technical virtuosity.
Performance and Recording Career
Throughout his burgeoning career, Draper performed extensively, captivating audiences with his impeccable phrasing and sparkling technique. He joined the Crystal Palace Orchestra in 1895 and became a respected member of Queen Victoria's band. In 1903, he premiered Charles Stanford's Clarinet Concerto and was the dedicatee of Stanford's Clarinet Sonata. Together with John Sanders and flutist Eli Hudson, he co-founded the New Symphony Orchestra in 1905.

Alongside his performance achievements, Draper's legacy as an educator is equally significant. He served as a faculty member at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (1895-1940), Trinity College, and the Royal College of Music.
