Charles Edmund Brock, known as C. E. Brock, was a renowned English book illustrator and pen-and-ink artist.
Early Life and Education
Born in Holloway, London, Brock was the eldest of four artist brothers, including Henry Matthew Brock. He later moved to Cambridge with his family. Brock briefly studied art under sculptor Henry Wills.
Career and Success
At the age of 20, Brock received his first book commission. He quickly rose to prominence, illustrating works by renowned authors such as Jonathan Swift, William Makepeace Thackeray, Jane Austen, and George Eliot.
Pen and Ink Illustrations
Brock's pen and ink illustrations earned him widespread recognition. Inspired by Hugh Thomson's style, he excelled in capturing the essence of characters and scenes with intricate line work.
Tinted Drawings
