Oscar Dominguez - Spanish Artist and Sculptor

Oscar Dominguez was a Spanish artist and sculptor, known as one of the most prominent figures of Surrealism alongside Salvador Dali and Joan Miro. He was born on January 7, 1906, in Tenerife, Spain. In his youth, he suffered from a serious illness that damaged his facial bones and limbs. From 1926, he lived in Paris, working in the family business of exporting bananas to France. In 1929, he permanently settled in Paris, where he became associated with various avant-garde groups and surrealist artists. In 1931, he painted a self-portrait depicting himself with severed veins. His early works, featuring fantastical and sexual motifs, were showcased in his first solo exhibition in May 1933 at the Galerie d'Art Nouveau in Tenerife. One of the typical works from this exhibition is "Surrealist Landscape" (1933, Tenerife).

Joining Andre Breton's Group

In 1934, Dominguez joined Andre Breton's group, where he remained until its dissolution in 1948. In 1936, he began using a technique called "decalcomania," which was coined by the Surrealists. Breton included "decalcomania" in his "Brief Dictionary of Surrealism."

In the same year, 1936, Dominguez started working on a series called "decalcomanic automatic intentional interpretations." These works focused on combining mechanical functioning with the portrayal of suppressed erotic desires. In 1947, Dominguez published a book of poetry titled "They Look at Each Other." He is also the author of numerous articles on surrealist techniques.

The Tragic End

Oscar Dominguez tragically ended his life by cutting his veins on December 31, 1957, in Paris.
