Biography of Charles Francois Dufay

Charles Francois Dufay was a French scientist, physicist, and member of the Paris Academy of Sciences. He made significant contributions in the systematic study of electrical effects. Dufay developed a program for investigating electrical phenomena and, as a result, discovered two types of electrical charges: "vitreous" and "resinous" (now known as positive and negative charges). He was the first to study electrical interactions and demonstrated that objects with the same charge repel each other, while objects with opposite charges attract each other. Dufay conducted his experiments using an electrometer, which allowed for the measurement of charge magnitude, instead of an electroscope.
