Charles L. Harness
Early Life and EducationCharles Ludwig Harness was born on December 29, 1915, in Colorado City, Texas. He attended Texas Christian University and received a law degree from George Washington University in 1946.
Professional Career
Harness worked as an economist for the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1941 to 1947. He then became a patent attorney for American Cyanamid (until 1953) and later joined the law firm W.R. Grace & Co. in New York and Washington, where he remained until his retirement in 1981.
Literary Career
Harness made his science fiction debut with the story "Time Trap" in the August 1948 issue of "Astounding Science Fiction." His first novel, "Flight Into Yesterday" (also known as "The Paradox Men"), was published in 1953 after being revised from a novella published in 1949.
Major Works
One of Harness' most famous works is the novella "The Rose," which was published in the anthology of the same name in 1966. Other notable novels include:

Harness' works were nominated for Hugo and Nebula Awards but never won. He was awarded the title of "Grand Master" by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2004.
Later Life and Death
Harness died on September 20, 2005, at Kidron Bethel Retirement Services in North Newton, Kansas. He was remembered as a talented and influential science fiction writer.
