Biography of Charles Lynch
Early Life and CareerCharles Lynch, a Canadian journalist, talented writer, and doctor of law, was born on December 3, 1919, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to a Canadian family. At just two weeks old, his family moved to Saint John, New Brunswick, in Canada. It was there, in 1936, that Charles began his career as a journalist. In 1940, he was appointed to a position at the Vancouver bureau of the British United Press information agency, and the following year, he transferred to Toronto as a manager. In 1943, during World War II, Charles Lynch became a war correspondent for Reuters News Agency and was among a small number of Canadian journalists who participated in the D-Day operation.
Post-War Career and Achievements
After the end of World War II, Charles Lynch closely observed the proceedings of the war crimes trials in Nuremberg for the first four months. He then moved with his family to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he became one of the leading South American correspondents. He soon gained the status of a prominent Canadian journalist and later became one of the leading correspondents in the United States. Finally, he became a CBC correspondent reporting on the United Nations. In 1958, Charles returned to Canada and headed one of the departments at the Southam News - Ottawa Bureau. After a few years, Lynch became the head of Southam News, experiencing a period of professional prosperity.
China, One Fourth of the World
In the spring of 1965, Charles Lynch embarked on a two-month journey to communist China, where he gathered a vast amount of material about the country and its leader, Mao Zedong. This material was published in a book titled "China, One Fourth of the World," which instantly became a bestseller in Canada. Charles received numerous awards throughout his career, including being appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in 1977, in recognition of his almost forty years of dedicated work as a talented journalist. In 1981, his name was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame.
Later Years and Legacy
In the final years of his life, Charles Lynch focused on his writing. He passed away on July 21, 1994. Four years after his death, the Charles Lynch Award was established in his honor.
