Childhood and Early Life
Charlie Day was born on February 9, 1976, in New York City. Both of his parents were involved in the arts: his father taught music at Salve Regina University, and his mother taught piano at Penfield School. Day grew up in Middletown, Rhode Island, with his older sister, Alice.
Day received early music training in guitar and piano, but his sister pursued it further, earning a doctorate in music theory. Day was more drawn to sports and theater, playing baseball and participating in drama club. After high school, he attended Merrimack College in Massachusetts, where he studied theater arts.
Early Career Struggles and Breakthrough
After graduating college, Day moved to New York City and pursued acting. He appeared in small TV roles, worked as a waiter and call center employee, and sang in bars. It was during one of his performances that he caught the attention of an agent.
His career breakthrough came in 2005 with the premiere of the FX comedy series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," which Day co-created with Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton.
"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and Beyond
"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" revolves around the dysfunctional owners and patrons of a rundown Irish pub called Paddy's Pub. Day plays Charlie Kelly, a former co-owner who is now the bar's janitor. Charlie is portrayed as a complete loser, illiterate, and unkempt.
Despite its crude humor and controversial content, the series has become a cult classic, airing for over 16 seasons. Day's performance has been praised for its physical comedy and portrayal of an endearing yet pathetic character.
Film Career
Day's film career began with a prominent role in the 2011 comedy "Horrible Bosses," where he played an amiable yet incompetent office worker. In "I Want You Back" (2022), he took on the role of a romantic lead, showcasing his range as an actor.
He has also appeared in the "Pacific Rim" science fiction franchise as Dr. Newton Geiszler. However, comedy remains Day's primary genre.
Personal Life
Day married Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who plays the unnamed waitress in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," in 2006. They welcomed a son, Russell Wallace, in 2011.
Recent Projects
In 2023, Day made his directorial debut with the comedy "Stuber," starring alongside an ensemble cast that included John Malkovich, Kate Beckinsale, and Ray Liotta. He also provided voiceover work for the animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
