Duke was born on October 3, 1935, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Science from the United States Naval Academy in 1957 and a Master of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964.

In April 1966, Duke was selected as one of 19 astronauts in NASA's fifth group. He was a member of the Apollo 16 mission, which was the fifth human landing on the Moon. The mission's lunar module remained on the Moon's surface for a total of 71 hours and 2 minutes.

Post-NASA Career

After his lunar mission, Duke became a minister, interpreting the Bible and making predictions based on the Old Testament. He has authored several books on his spiritual beliefs and is a sought-after speaker on Christian theology.
