Phạm Tuân: The First Vietnamese Cosmonaut
Phạm Tuân was born on February 14, 1947, in a peasant family in Vietnam. His childhood and school years were spent in the village of Quốc Tuấn. After completing high school in 1964, he was drafted into the Vietnam People's Army.
Early Career
Despite initial doubts about his health, Tuân's exceptional skills led him to be selected for aviation training in the Soviet Union. In 1967, he graduated from the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School and returned to Vietnam to serve in the fighter aviation force.
Heroic Accomplishments
Tuân became a member of the prestigious "Red Star" regiment, showcasing his flying prowess. He mastered night flights and achieved a remarkable accomplishment in 1972 by shooting down an American B-52 bomber, marking the only instance during the Vietnam War where a strategic bomber was downed by a Vietnamese fighter pilot.
Selection for Spaceflight
In 1979, Tuân was chosen alongside Bùi Thanh Liêm for the Soviet-led Intercosmos program. He underwent rigorous training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia.
Historic Mission
On July 23, 1980, Tuân became the first Vietnamese cosmonaut when he launched aboard the Soyuz-37 spacecraft alongside Soviet cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko. During their seven-day mission, they worked aboard the Salyut-6 space station.
Recognition and Honors
Tuân's historic achievement earned him numerous accolades. He was awarded the titles of Hero of the Soviet Union, Hero of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and Hero of Labor of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Additionally, he received the Soviet Order of Lenin, the Vietnamese Order of Ho Chi Minh First Class, and various other decorations.
Post-Spaceflight Career
After his return to Vietnam, Tuân briefly served in the Vietnamese Air Force before returning to the Soviet Union to study at the Yuri Gagarin Air Force Academy. He graduated in 1982 and went on to become the Head of the Political Department of the Vietnam Air Force.
